The Improvisation Support System

The Improvisation Support System is Ensemble Moto Perpetuo’s technical arm: a modular, laptop-based extensible system integrating sensors, microcontrollers, machine-listening, LISP-based artificial intelligence and dynamic score generation, video projection, computer vision and multi-channel playback.

The basic principles of the ISS are these: that the technology should be transparent to the human performers and that the technology should be an active participant in the improvisational fabric.

Ensemble Moto Perpetuo believes strongly that technology should be more than a passive participant in musical form: we believe that new musical forms can flow from new sounds and new methods of interaction and that our New Music should reflect these possibilities.  The Improvisational Support System designed by our Technical Director Nicholas R. Nelson represents our first steps toward realizing this possibility.
