David Whitwell began trombone studies at age seven. By 16 he was leading his own jazz combo in his hometown of St. Louis. After switching focus to concert music in 2006, Whitwell has premiered over 30 new works for trombone and serves as principal trombone in three professional ensembles. In addition to serving as brass principal and principal trombone for Ensemble Moto Perpetuo, Whitwell serves as principal trombone for chamber ensemble The Cabinet, principal trombone of the Bermuda Festival Orchestra, and operates two jazz groups, The Carnegie Custodians and Trio TBD. He recently completed a residency at IBeam Brooklyn in which he premiered 10 new works for solo trombone. Whitwell is a recipient of the De Los Medros special prize in contemporary music and records new works for Italian record label ABEditore. Whitwell’s upcoming events include a recital of new works for trombone and organ, and a Euorpean tour with Trio TBD.
Whitwell holds two bachelors degrees from the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Prof. Bruce Bonvisutto.
