A native of Yokohama City, Japan, Chihiro Shibayama is a New York City-based freelance percussionist. She is an active performer as a soloist, member of orchestras, chamber groups and a dedicated educator. She also is a co-founder of MuSE (Multicultural Sonic Evolution), a non-profit organization that creates a multicultural environment through sound and collaborations with other artistic disciplines such as dance, theater and film. MuSE produces concerts and shows covering a wide spectrum of genres from classical to pop, jazz, folk and rock.
Shibayama has toured Nagoya and Tokyo, Japan with The Metropolitan Opera as an on-stage percussionist for “La bohème.” She was also selected as a musician for the renowned “Radio City Christmas Spectacular” in 2010 and 2011. Among other notable performances she was one of the on-stage percussionists in the U.S. premiere of Tan Dun’s opera, “TEA – A Mirror of Soul” at The Santa Fe Opera in 2007 and the East coast premiere of the work at the Opera Company of Philadelphia in 2010. She earned a both a bachelor and master of music from The Juilliard School in 2007 and 2009.
